Pere Marquette State Park With nearly 8000 acres, Pere Marquette State is Illinois’ largest state park and one of the most picturesque and beautiful locations on the Illinois River. Gordon Moore Park From recreation to winding nature trails, enjoy fishing in the 13-acre lake or spend the afternoon walking among trickling streams of the Oriental Garden Trail, the Nan Elliott Memorial Rose Garden or the Nature Institute Prairie Trail. Spring and fall are especially good times to witness migrating waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds and songbirds. As part of the refuge, the three-mile Gilbert Lake Trail runs on top of a levee with the Illinois River and Gilbert Lake on each side, enabling visitors to spot deer, waterfowl and wading birds in the floodplain forests. Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary The sanctuary has been designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society and hosts an abundant array of waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors and wading birds. Bald Eagles and Trumpeter Swans make their winter home here, while white pelicans and countless other species migrate through this area.
